Learn What Excoriated Acne Is and How to Treat It
Acne cyst on face looks like bruise
This melanoma is spreading out as it grows.
123
Sarah developed both acne and an unknown rash at the same time.
Acne spots are often red because the skin is inflamed. They can look ‘swollen’, ‘raw’ and ‘angry’. People would ask Rachael questions because her acne “looks really painful”, even when it didn’t hurt. Tom felt his skin was “covered in red things.” Becky and Ollie avoided wearing white or brightly coloured clothing because they worried it would make the redness of their acne stand out more.
Would you be able to say a bit more about those differences between sort of teen acne and then adult acne?
Some sebaceous cysts go away on their own, but, as with epidermal cysts, which don’t tend to go away on their own, they’ll need to be removed if they become infected.
The cysts can leave permanent marks on your skin, including:
If someone in your house has a skin abscess, prevent the spread of infection by not sharing clothes, towels, washcloths, sheets, or anything else that may have touched the abscess.
Center of Surgical Dermatology is the largest medical and surgical skin treatment and wellness facility in Central Ohio. Since 2007, our board-certified dermatologists, fellowship-trained Mohs surgeons, and caring professional staff have provided patients with effective skincare treatments they can trust in an environment second to none.
Treatment
MRSA blisters commonly form on areas covered by hair, such as the back of the neck, groin, buttocks, armpit, and beard areas.
This causes a lot of pain and inflammation that tends to last a long time because the body has to break down and carry away skin cells that don’t belong under the skin.
An acne cyst is usually red and may have a whitish-yellow head. A cyst can be crusty, painful, or tender to touch, and either large or small in size.
But this can turn a minor issue into a larger, chronic problem.
Well personally I don’t really pick my spots that much. The reason why my back got so bad with all the scarring and stuff with that is that it just used to get quite itchy so I just used to scratch and not really care. But I don’t feel much of a temptation for picking spots just because it’s quite painful and it’s not very nice, and I found that they come back worse and you can end with huge ones if you, if you have a cluster of spots and then you pick them all away, and it leads to scarring of course and you get more yellow the pustule ones from picking, cos I think the dirt or whatever infects it. So, actually I think the problems of picking your spots definitely outweighs the enjoyment you get from picking them.
Long-term sun exposure to the lips can present as chapped lips. However, if it persists and doesn’t go away, it’s time for a trip to the dermatologist. This condition may be actinic cheilitis, and although this is considered pre-malignant, you will want quick action to be taken so that it won’t advance.
Melanoma that looks like a bruise
Sometimes, melanoma causes discomfort. It can:
Believe it or not, melanomas can appear on the eye; we refer to them as ocular melanomas . If you have a history of melanoma, it is recommended that you have an eye exam once a year. Dermatologists may notice these when examining the eye as a routine annual checkup but the findings can be very subtle. You may not even notice yourself. It is often the case that your eye doctor finds it during a routine eye exam.
I mean I, since I’ve come to university I’ve gone to like a different doctors surgery, I did stick with him for quite a while. And I found him quite useful like one of his things was like he had like a chart and it had like a numbered boxes and different like shots of skin like with varying scales of acne so like eight was the worst, one was the least like, the most mild and he would kind of like point out where you think you are on this scale. So where I pointed out was kind of much more severe than his diagnosis which actually did make me feel a lot better about it because I realised that potentially some of the like how I was conceiving it was maybe a bit worse than it was at that point.
Unlike boils, pimples aren’t caused by an infection. Instead, they are caused by blocked pores. This blockage causes pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads to form a bump on the skin. Pimples are the main symptom of acne, a common skin condition.
Lots of people said they knew that they shouldn’t scratch or pick at their acne. Kosta has heard it causes scarring. Many people found it was difficult not to pick or squeeze spots, and most had done this at some point. Sometimes they hoped that squeezing a spot would make it ‘die down’ and give relief, which some found it could, but it can also cause it to become more sore and visible (inflamed, bleed, scab over). Bleeding and oozing spots could then stain clothes, bedding and towels.
Those with chronic excoriated acne tend to be people who cannot control their compulsive urge to scratch or pick at their skin. The constant squeezing and picking can cause open sores. When these sores scab up, they lend themselves to more picking. It becomes a vicious cycle that is hard to break.
So that was a helpful exercise and it kind of, I think it was useful in terms of like maybe calming me down a bit.
Skin abscesses usually are red, swollen, and warm to the touch, and might leak fluid. An abscess that forms in the surface of the skin might look like an unhealed wound or a pimple. An abscess that forms underneath the skin may create a swollen bump. The area can be painful and tender.
Treatment and Medication Options for Epidermoid Cysts
This photo contains content that some people may find graphic or disturbing.
If a cyst becomes inflamed, a doctor can inject it with a steroid to reduce swelling. Cysts that become infected, on the other hand, may need to be surgically removed. Dermatologists and plastic surgeons can perform this procedure. To do this, your doctor will make a small puncture and remove the contents. But cysts frequently return after removal and will ultimately need to be surgically removed again. If a cyst becomes swollen or infected, antibiotics may be called for before surgery. Larger cysts may also need to be removed if they cause hair loss on the scalp, interfere with clothing (for instance, if a piece of clothing routinely rubs the cyst, causes irritation), or if the cyst is in an obvious place, like the face.
Did you spot the asymmetry, uneven border, varied color, and diameter larger than that of a pencil eraser?
This reddish nodule looks a lot like a cyst, but testing proved that it was a melanoma.
Make sure your child avoids touching, pushing, popping, or squeezing the abscess because that can spread the infection to other parts of the skin, making things worse.
So there arent any, you know, very well recognised grading systems for acne. Theres lots of different types and some of them are more kind of global, so mild, moderate, severe, very severe. Some of them, for research purposes, might focus on things like spot counting. And some of them will also look at the different types of spots, so youve got comedones, pustules, cysts, scarring. These types of things. So, generally the kind of more global assessments are used when youre using it sort of clinically and then decisions about treatment will be made on how severe the acne is, how much it’s affecting people, and also how likely it is to scar. So those are the most important things. Because really when youre treating acne it’s not just for improving the acne as it is but also preventing scarring long-term because scarring can be permanent.
What happens if a cyst bursts under the skin is the body recognizes the cells that leaked out don’t belong there. As the body works to fight the cells and push them out, the skin over the cyst becomes thin, red, and inflamed. The contents start to ooze out of the pores in an attempt for the body to push out the ball of skin cells.
Symptoms of impetigo typically occur within three days after infection. They can include:
Why Should You Visit a Dermatologist Before Your Cyst Ruptures?
On the other hand, if the cyst isn’t ruptured, it’s relatively easy to remove the entire cyst, which allows the wound care to heal quickly so you can avoid the problems of chronically ruptured cysts.
Excoriated acne occurs when pimples have been scratched or picked to the point of wounding the skin. Although anyone can develop excoriated acne, it tends to occur more frequently in women. It can begin at almost any age.
You or someone you know has probably had some kind of cyst. In many cases, a person will have a cyst, not realize what it is, and then ignore it because it’s not bothering them at the moment.
Treatment for excoriated acne is tailored to the individual. In addition to acne medications, those with excoriated acne may benefit from psychological counseling, drug therapies for those with underlying mood disorders, or substitution therapies.
Dermatillomania is like an obsessive condition where you pick at your skin basically. And like I know for me it’s just anything I feel shouldn’t be on my skin, like I just start picking at my skin. And then it just turns into scabs and then I’ll pick my scabs because they’re also imperfections and things that I see on my skin. So-
Acne severity is often measured medically in four main categories:
People with excoriated acne usually wish they could stop picking at their skin. Sometimes, a dermatologist may be able to help by explaining the importance of a «hands-off» policy. But often it isn’t a matter of willpower.
Symptoms of hidradenitis suppurativa include:
Treatment
If you have the compulsive desire to pick at your skin, you need to talk with your dermatologist or family practitioner. It might help to ask yourself some of these questions: Does picking at your skin take up a lot of time and get in the way of your social/professional life? Do you have noticeable scars from skin picking?
Some people were told by their doctors which category their acne was in, based on how many spots they had and whether they’re painful or inflamed. Rachael was upset hearing she had “moderately severe” acne, but others found it useful to know. Marga found it good seeing where she was “on the scale” because it made the “logic” behind trying different treatments “more easily understandable.”

Body mole map
Use this diagram to draw the moles and other spots on your skin so that you can spot a change early.Well, a lot of people that I know didn’t really know what dermatillomania was. And for me I started doing a lot of research because I thought this can’t be normal, like what I’m doing. And in the end I did go to my local Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services to basically say, Look, I’m suffering with this. And to start with, they actually didn’t know what it was. And they decided that they wanted to try and transfer me to see a dermatologist because it weren’t anything that they could deal with. But then I had to basically educate them on what it was because I’d done my research. And then they kind of realised that obviously it’s not just a skin condition, it is something to do with your mind as well.
It’s easy to panic when you notice a lump on your skin. You may wonder if it’s melanoma or another type of skin cancer.
Cystic Acne Home Remedies
Skin boils are often caused by an infection with Staphylococcus bacteria. They may also develop from other infectious agents, like group A Streptococcus.
The most common type of cyst is a sebaceous cyst. Think of a cyst as a balloon with the opening at the top on the outside of the skin. The skin on the inside that lines the balloon is producing skin cells.
Image 2: Developed by the American Academy of Dermatology
For most of my history of acne it was just kind of suffering from cystic acne, so just like big lumps under the skin. Which is quite difficult because they can take weeks and weeks to fade, and they’ll leave you like a lump of scar tissue underneath. And yeah, so and you tend to get like a couple of big ones of those. And when I got them on my jaw, they sort of all joined up, so it was like just really like a big solid like lump of, of kind of infected tissue. And I, so I wasn’t really sure what to do about that. And then I just left it, but. Yeah. So I’d get like those big lumps. And then because of that there’d be like-, and obviously my skin was quite bumpy even when it was fading. And then just having like quite a lot of fade marks. So I guess especially if I scratched them, I think- I don’t know if my skin just lost its ability to recover as well, maybe over just the long period that I had acne. So it tended to be that at the beginning they would fade within a couple of days. And then towards the end like I’d be left with kind of fade marks for weeks, for, you know, maybe even months.
A blister caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection is also called a staph infection. But even though it’s common for MRSA to show up as blisters or boils, not all blisters or boils are from MRSA.
But then like when I was about 14, 15, like I started like picking at my skin as well and became obsessed about like getting rid of everything that I saw was an imperfection. And when my acne had like started to calm down a bit, I was still picking at my skin, even though there was nothing really there. And it developed into dermatillomania, which is what I suffer with now and continue to suffer with, even though the acne isn’t always there any more.
What Is Melanoma? Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention
Sometimes, however, they can become inflamed, infected, or suddenly rupture, which can increase the risk of infection (more on that later). Occasionally, they occur on a site that is constantly irritated, such as a cyst on your neck that rubs against your collar, or one on your back under a bra strap.
But sebaceous cysts — slow-growing bumps under the skin that can appear on the ears, scalp, face, torso, back, or groin area — are typically harmless. And while they can be irritating (or unsightly), they are not cancerous. Here’s what you need to know — and do — if you have a sebaceous cyst.
It wasn’t that painful usually, but then sometimes you’d get sort of the big kind of nodal acne where you’d have these big lumps under your skin and that would be painful. You’d like, they’d sort of throb during the day and if you touched them they’d be painful. So that was a kind of uncomfortable pain. But with, with the, sort of when you put certain creams on or, yeah, or oils and things and they have a bit of a burn, it’s not really, sometimes it’s a burn, sometimes it’s more of a tingle. But it’s that, it’s kind of that feeling of, like if you were cleaning the hob or something and it would just, it would kind of like sizzle away all the grime and you’d clean it. It’s sort of, that kind of burning is a sort of a feeling of cleanliness almost, yeah. I don’t know if that makes sense.
And as for that secretion that can emerge from the cyst? It comes from the cells that form the walls of the cysts. Those cells secrete a protein, known as keratin. These cysts are also made of fat, and it’s often that substance, or infection, that makes the smell, according to American Family Physician.
Could you tell me a bit about that time when you first started picking and when you then got the diagnosis of dermatillomania?
If a sebaceous cyst becomes swollen or tender, home treatments may also help. One easy thing to try: applying a warm moist compress, which can help the cyst drain. What not to do: Resist the urge to pop or squeeze the cyst, like a pimple. It won’t end well.

AUTISM IN BABIES AND YOUNG CHILDREN
Autism is described as a spectrum of disorders for a reason. Signs of autism can present differently.
Can a child be slightly autistic?
A child could have mild symptoms of autism, but parents and guardians should still take proactive steps to seek a diagnosis.
When a child has autism spectrum disorder (ASD), caregivers can work with professionals to develop appropriate strategies in response. These strategies help children thrive in their environment through appropriate accommodations, therapy, and parent training.
While some children with autism may rarely encounter challenges related to their disorder, others may find that negative experiences increase as they get older. This can lead to unwanted stress, potentially up to the point of a crisis event. In extreme cases, a child could lose opportunities to advance in school or other life areas.
Understanding a child’s needs is important. Individuals in their life should never brush away observations that a child might have a behavior disorder. Instead, they can educate themselves on the signs of ASD and look into the next best actions to take.
Being “On the Spectrum” Can Mean a Wide Variety of Experiences
Autism is described as a spectrum of disorders for a reason. Signs of autism can present differently.
Some individuals will have significant behavior and communication challenges that make the possibility of an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis more likely.
In other cases, caregivers may notice occasional “atypical” behaviors but that don’t immediately cause them to seek a full behavioral health evaluation.
In the latter scenario, a child may never have their autism diagnosed or addressed therapeutically. It’s possible that mildly-expressed forms of ASD behavior go completely unnoticed.
But another possibility is that an undiagnosed child or their caregiver will feel frustrated by a lack of explanation for certain behavioral events. They may struggle with socialization, for instance, or they may lack commitment to extracurricular activities.
Ignoring the possibility of an autism diagnosis, especially if a child seems mostly neurotypical, can make it more difficult for them to adjust and have their needs met. For this reason, teachers and caregivers who observe subtle signs of ASD should speak with a mental health professional.
A child’s parents, teachers, and others with a direct role in their life are the best observers when it comes to picking up on a possible autism spectrum disorder diagnosis. Only a licensed mental health professional can come to a full, accurate diagnosis, but you don’t have to be a professional to suspect that an ASD diagnosis is possible.
What Are Some Possible Signs of Mild Autism?
ASD encompasses a broad range of behavioral patterns and experiences.
Inconsistency from one ASD case to the next can make it more difficult for caregivers to fully connect the dots.
Even so, there are many common behaviors that could point to a possible ASD diagnosis. Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC ), these may include:
- Repetitive play or verbal expressiveness (echolalia)
- A fixation on certain activities, ideas, or concepts
- A reluctance to engage in new experiences or to disrupt routines
- Aversion to certain forms of interaction, especially hugging or cuddling
- Avoiding eye contact and being difficult to engage in conversation
- Missing verbal or physical cues, such as not looking at where someone is pointing
- Having difficulty understanding others’ feelings or talking about feelings in general
- Reluctance to socialize or a preference for isolation
- Trouble expressing their needs or wishes
- Unexpected reactions to certain sights, sounds, textures, or smells
- Tantrums or explosive aggression with unexpected triggers
Some children with ASD may appear to have a learning disability or other form of behavior disorder. They may also have co-occurring medical challenges, such as gastrointestinal (GI) discomfort , trouble sleeping, or seizures . Many individuals with autism may also have mental health disorders, such as anxiety, depression, or an attention deficit disorder .
It is also possible that any of the above behavior signs could be related to something other than autism, such as if a child has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This possibility should encourage those in the child’s life to seek a diagnostic assessment from a professional who can advise parents and others how best to address their needs.
Any Form of Autism Can Benefit From a Therapeutic Approach
Unnoticeable signs of autism can be detrimental to a child’s wellbeing when caregivers neglect to investigate further. People with autism can be given strategies and support that can help them work alongside their condition and be successful while still being completely and utterly themselves.
Once you begin talking with professionals about your child’s unique situation and any unexpected behaviors or occurrences, you can begin to understand him or her better. With support from clinicians and the community, you can provide conditions and strategies that encourage your child to have a less stressful, more fulfilling life.
If you think your child or a child in your life might have autism, take the first step toward seeing if they need extra care, attention, and support from you. Seek a diagnosis and support from professionals who use an evidence-based approach to achieve goals that help children thrive.
Therapeutic Pathways offers evidence-based autism treatment , including assessments post diagnosis for treatment purposes. Contact us today with concerns or for resources to help you determine if your child has ASD and the steps to take after receiving a diagnosis.
What does autism look like in a baby
Autism is a lifelong condition that affects how a person understands the world and interacts with others. These days autism is more properly called autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and it covers a number of similar conditions; these include classic autism, Asperger syndrome and pervasive developmental disorder
ASD affects more than one in 100 people in the UK and commonly causes difficulties with:
- Social interactions, such as making friends or just generally interpreting social situations
- Language, understanding and communication, including problems with speech or recognising facial expressions, tone of voice and body language
- Behaviour can involve repetitive routines and intense focus on interests and activities.
How is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Detected?
The average age of diagnosis of ASD in the UK is about 5½ years old but a few children are diagnosed at as young as 2 years old. Diagnosis is largely based solely on a person’s behaviour – usually they have persistent difficulties with interacting and communicating with others plus restricted and repetitive behaviour that ‘limits and impairs their everyday functioning’.This makes it difficult to detect ASD in infants and children younger than 2 years old, because they are only just beginning to learn social behaviour and how to communicate so the tell-tale signs of ASD are not present.
What are the causes of Autism in Toddlers?
The cause of ASD is unknown but it can affect several people in one family. We do know that ASD is not an illness or a disease and there is no “cure” or medical treatment. While some with the condition require no hep whatsoever, others will benefit from support in different areas of their lives.
Signs and Symptoms of autism in babies and young children can include
- Avoiding eye contact
- Not responding to their name by 12 months of age
- Not playing ‘pretend’ games (e.g. feeding a doll with play food)
- Not smiling back when you smile at them
- Not playing social games like ‘peek-a-boo’
- Being over-sensitive or reacting strangely to some tastes, smells or sounds
- Not pointing at interesting objects or looking when you point
- Being very late starting to ‘babble’ and talk, not talking as much as other children or being able to say fewer than ten words at age 2 years old
- Repetitive movements, for example rocking their body, flicking their fingers or hand-flapping
- Repeating the same phrases over and over.
Some children develop well at first, but then slip back (regress) and lose some of the language and skills they once had.
Confirming a diagnosis is not straightforward, especially in quite young children and may take several appointments spread over time. Also remember that many of the signs might be explained by other developmental conditions.
ARE THERE ANY EARLIER WARNING SIGNS?
Some babies have a higher than average chance of developing ASD, for example if they have an older brother or sister with ASD, if they were premature (by five weeks or more) or if they have certain other medical conditions. Some researchers say that these babies can show some early warning signs from around 6 to 12 months; however these are not practical things that parents can spot themselves and currently we have no reliable way to screen babies or toddlers for ASD.
WHAT CAN I DO IF I THINK MY CHILD MAY HAVE ASD?
Because there isn’t a national screening programme for ASD in the UKit’s down to parents and carers to be alert to any early signs of ASD and to seek help if they suspect there may be a problem. If you’re worried talk to your health visitor or GP – even if your little one is less than 2 years old – and explain your concerns. It can be useful to keep a behaviour diary to list the signs that make you wonder if your child has ASD.
You know your baby better than anyone else and will be in tune with their abilities and behaviour so follow your instincts. In fact there’s some evidence that parents are better at spotting ASD-type behaviour in 12- and 18-month-olds than medical professionals.
Initially your health visitor or GP might complete a screening questionnaire with you called M-CHAT (Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers). If they’re concerned they will then refer your little one to a local team of professionals for assessment. This team might include a paediatrician, a speech and language therapist and a specialist psychologist. It can take some time between referral and your child having their assessment: while waiting do continue to keep a behaviour diary so that you can share it with the team when you and your child attend.
Following the assessment you will be informed of the findings, and should the diagnosis be ASD your child and your family will then be in a position to access the extra support needed. This may include family support, occupational therapy, speech therapy and educational support going forwards.

The Main Signs of Autism in a 3 Year Old
The segment begins at 2:23 in the video.
What is Autism?
Learn how to recognize the potential signs of autism in your child.
Early Behavior and Communication Challenges to Look for in Babies and Toddlers
The sound of the first cry. The first time the eyes blink open. The first tooth that pokes through. The first bite of food (more than likely followed by the first spit of food). The first word spoken aloud. Those first steps.
Early identification of autism and other delays is key when it comes to your kiddo’s overall development. Throughout your child’s first 15-24 months, here are a few things to watch:
- An absence of smiles or avoidance of eye contact
- Lack of communication skills
- Preference of alone time over playing with other children
- Negative behaviors sparked by change in route or routine
- Sensory issues to lights, sounds, smells, textures, and tastes
If you’ve read through these early signs and are still interested in learning more about a diagnostic analysis, please fill out this form or reach out to your pediatrician for a referral.

What does autism look like in a baby
With an estimated 1 in 59 American children affected by autism, it is important that parents and caregivers understand how to identify the signs of autism in children of all ages.
What is autism?
Autism or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that mainly affects an individual’s ability to communicate and socialize with others. The age at which children are diagnosed with autism varies greatly, with some currently diagnosed as early as 18 months old. However, the majority of children are still diagnosed after the age of 3 years old.
An autism diagnosis at 3 years old
Early intervention is key in improving the long-term outcomes for a child with autism. A confirmed diagnosis before the age of 3, or just after, means improved outcomes for a child with autism. Depending on the severity of autism spectrum disorder symptoms, intervention can include a range of intensive therapies and support options. But regardless of the intervention required, the earlier it happens, the better.
Autism is a spectrum disorder. This means that symptoms can vary widely between different children. Ongoing research also suggests that boys and girls with autism may present with symptoms unique to their gender. It is now also evidenced that higher functioning girls with autism can better mask their symptoms and understand how to mimic behavior that allows them to copy and imitate expected social cues and interactions. This makes continued research essential in deepening our understanding of the condition and its presence in different individuals.
What are the main signs of autism in a 3 year old?
The main signs of autism in a 3 year old may vary, depending on where on the autism spectrum a child is. In high functioning autistic children, symptoms may be milder and harder to identify.
Understanding the nuances of how autism presents in children of different ages is important in diagnosing and supporting children with ASD.
The following are an example of some of the potential signs of autism in a 3 year old:
Symptoms relating to social skills development:
- Shows no interest in responding to their name
- Purposely avoids eye contact
- Consistently chooses to engage in solitary play and activities
- Displays reluctance to share or take turns and a lack of interest in engaging with others in such a way. This is also usually accompanied by an unwillingness to socialize with other children.
- Is sensitive to and avoids physical contact.
- Struggles to understand and empathize with others’ feelings can include close family members and primary caregivers and difficulties expressing emotions and feelings of their own.
Symptoms relating to language and communication skills:
- Speech and language delay
- Failure to use gestures, such as waving, to communicate with others an intention or need.
- Uses a flat voice when speaking.
- Does not engage in pretend or make-believe play at a level that is age-appropriate.
- Repeats back to others their speech, rather than initiating speech of their own.
Symptoms relating to behavior:
- Repetitive movements are a common symptom of autism in young children. These might include hand flapping and whole-body rocking.
- Difficulty in adapting to changes in the routine, environment, and people within care or familiar setting.
- Shows an almost obsessive interest in specific toys, objects, or topics.
- Displays signs of hyperactivity and attention deficit disorder.
- Repeats patterns of play with toys and other objects.
- In some children with autism, impulsivity, aggression, and a tendency to self-injure are potential behaviors related to the condition.
- Irregular sleeping and eating habits.
- Does not handle sensory stimuli well. Children with autism may be overwhelmed by specific or loud noises and smells. This might make it difficult to visit everyday places, including the supermarket or other public places.
What is the next step for parents who have identified possible autism symptoms in their 3 year old?
For parents concerned about possible autism symptoms in their child of any age, the first step is to consult with their primary caregiver or pediatrician. There are widely accepted steps and processes to secure a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder for a child.
If the signs of autism are also accompanied by a delay in other areas of the child’s development, or possibly with unique facial features, there may also be a recommendation to proceed with genetic counseling, followed by some form of genetic analysis to confirm or rule out a rare disease.
Some genetic syndromes, including Rett syndrome and Fragile X syndrome, present with autism as the main symptom. Genetic analysis can help parents understand if autism is a stand-alone symptom or part of several unique features that may lead to a rare disease diagnosis.

Skin Discolouration
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS)
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a painful, long-term skin condition. It causes abscesses and scarring on the skin. The exact cause of hidradenitis suppurativa is unknown. It occurs near hair follicles where there are sweat glands, usually around the groin, buttocks, breasts and armpits.
Symptoms of hidradenitis suppurativa
The symptoms of hidradenitis suppurativa range from mild to severe.
It causes a mixture of red boil-like lumps, blackheads, cysts, scarring and channels in the skin that leak pus.
The condition tends to start with a firm pea-sized lesion that develops in one place. This will either disappear or rupture and ooze pus after a few hours or days.
New lumps will then often develop in an area nearby.
If these aren’t controlled with medication, larger lumps may develop and spread.
Narrow channels called sinus tracts also form under the skin that break out on the surface and leak pus.
Hidradenitis suppurativa is very painful. The lumps develop on the skin in the following areas:
- around the groin and genitals
- in the armpits
- on the buttocks and around the anus (back passage)
- below the breasts
The abscesses may also spread to the nape of the neck, waistband and inner thighs. Other isolated areas that have been known to be affected include the front or back of the legs, the sides, the back area and even the face.
Some of the lumps may become infected with bacteria, causing a secondary infection that will need to be treated with antibiotics (see below).
Many people with hidradenitis suppurativa also develop a pilonidal sinus. This is a small hole or ’tunnel’ in the skin.
For reasons that are unclear, more women than men have the condition. It’s thought to affect about 1 per cent of the population.
Causes of hidradenitis suppurativa
The exact cause of hidradenitis suppurativa is unclear. The lumps develop as a result of blocked hair follicles.
Smoking and obesity are both strongly associated with hidradenitis suppurativa. If you’re obese and/or smoke, it’s likely to make your symptoms worse.
Hidradenitis suppurativa usually starts around puberty, but it can occur at any age. It’s less common before puberty and after the menopause. This may suggest that the sex hormones play a part.
Many people with the condition also have acne and hirsutism (excessive hair growth).
In rare cases, hidradenitis suppurativa may be linked to Crohn’s disease. This is particularly if it develops around the groin area and the skin near the anus.
Crohn’s disease is a long-term condition. It causes the lining of the digestive system to become inflamed.
Hidradenitis suppurativa runs in families in about a third of all cases. It’s not infectious and isn’t linked to poor hygiene.
Diagnosing hidradenitis suppurativa
There’s no definitive test to help diagnose hidradenitis suppurativa.
Your GP will examine the affected areas of skin. They may take a swab of an infected area.
This can be helpful in making a diagnosis because the condition isn’t usually associated with the presence of bacteria that cause skin infections.
Hidradenitis suppurativa could potentially be mistaken for acne or folliculitis (inflammation of the hair follicles).
Treating hidradenitis suppurativa
Hidradenitis suppurativa is a lifelong, recurring condition. The condition requires constant management and is often difficult to manage.
It’s important to try to recognise and diagnose the condition in its early stages and prevent it getting worse.
Treatment for hidradenitis suppurativa will depend on your symptoms. In the early stages, it may be controlled with medication.
Surgery may be required in severe or persistent cases. Your GP will discuss treatment options with you.
Lifestyle advice
If you have hidradenitis suppurativa you should:
- lose any excess weight
- stop smoking, if you smoke
- use an antiseptic skin wash or antiseptic soap – this may be prescribed alongside other treatment (see above)
- hold a warm flannel on the lumps to encourage the pus to drain
- wear loose-fitting clothes
- avoid shaving affected skin and avoid wearing perfume or perfumed deodorants in the affected areas
Outlook
Although hidradenitis suppurativa can persist for many years, if it’s diagnosed early the symptoms can be improved with treatment.
The condition can have a significant impact on a person’s everyday life.
Having to regularly change dressings and constantly live with the pain, discomfort and embarrassment of the symptoms can affect your quality of life and lead to depression.
Speak to your GP if you’re having problems coping with the condition.

Skin Discolouration
Skin discolouration is a common side effect of the acne healing process where the skin around an acne lesion changes colour from your natural skin tone and is left discoloured after the acne lesion has healed.
Acne lesions can cause skin discolouration in a number of ways. Blood vessels in the area of the lesion may dilate as part of the body’s healing response, leaving the skin looking red or purple. Damage to the skin cells by acne lesions may also cause the cells to release more melanin, which is a pigment that causes the skin to look brown.
Sometimes the body will clear these causes of skin discolouration over time and the skin will return to its original complexion. However, these changes to the skin may not heal and can become permanent.
Skin discolouration as a result of acne can occur anywhere on the body that acne forms and is largely dependent on how your skin heals.
What factors make it more likely that skin discolouration will occur?
Inflammation plays a role in the development of skin discolouration. The deeper that inflammation from an acne lesion reaches into the skin the more likely discolouration is to occur. This is one of the reasons that it is important to treat acne as soon as possible, to lower the risk of deep inflammation.
Picking or squeezing acne lesions can damage the skin and lead to an increased chance of discolouration. It is not advised that you pick at or squeeze your acne. However, in reality many people do this in an attempt to remove pus. If you are insistent on picking at or squeezing your acne to remove pus then please see our guide on how to lower your chances of damaging your skin here .
You are also more likely to develop discolouration if you smoke, as smoking leads to an increased risk of skin damage in general.
People with darker skin types are also at a higher risk of developing discolouration as darker skin also produces more pigment after it has been damaged than lighter skin, meaning that discolouration is more likely.
Skin Discolouration Treatments
There are several treatments that can help to reduce the skin discolouration that can be caused by acne. Some of the more common treatments that are used in the treatment of skin discolouration are listed below.
It is important to remember that discolouration reduction treatments are not readily available on the NHS. If you are thinking about paying for a discolouration reduction treatment privately then be sure to research your practitioner and make certain that they are qualified to conduct the procedure, such as a Consultant Dermatologist or Plastic Surgeon. It is often advisable to use a practitioner who can carry out all of the various forms of discolouration reduction treatments that are discussed above, as they will be able to advise you on the best option for your skin colour and nature of discolouration.
Please note that all of the treatments above have potential side effects, such as burns, skin peeling, irritation, skin bleaching and changes to skin texture. Darker skin types are at higher risk of suffering the side effects of scar removal. Please talk to your doctor to find out more about the risks involved for any treatment that you may be considering.
Topical Retinols and Topical Retinoids
This treatment works by encouraging the production of a protein called collagen in the skin. Collagen leads to the production of new skin cells and the shedding of old ones, this includes the shedding of damaged, discoloured skin cells.
Dermabrasion
This is where a special tool is used to remove the top layers of skin through friction, not unlike a sanding machine. As the layers of skin are removed the discolouration caused by scarring can become reduced.
Microneedling
This treatment is sometimes known as collagen induction therapy. It works by using a special tool to create several, tiny injuries within a scar. These injuries usually heal within two days and new collagen is formed inside of the scar. Collagen is a protein that help gives our skin strength and elasticity. Through this process microneedling can reduce the discolouration associated with scarring by encouraging old skin cells to shed, including skin cells that have been discoloured by excess pigment. Multiple treatments tend to be required every four-six weeks to gain maximum benefits. It is important to note that reducing skin discolouration is not microneedling’s main purpose and targeted treatments designed for treating skin discolouration may work better.
Chemical Peels
This treatment works by removing the outer layers of skin using high concentrations of glycolic or salicylic acid. In doing so, it can reduce the discolouring that is associated with scarring. This treatment should only be carried out by a qualified practitioner (visit www.jccp.org.uk).
Laser Therapy
Ablative laser therapy uses high energy light to remove the outer layers of skin, which can reduce the discolouration that is associated with scarring. There are multiple laser therapies that are available for the treatment of acne scarring. A consultant dermatologist will be able to determine which treatment is right for you based on your skin colour and the nature of your scarring.
